Scent-sational: Island Basics Body Mist

I am not a fan of heavy, heady fragrances. As much as possible I try to find ones that won’t blatantly announce my presence in the room. I want a fragrance that would make a person want to get closer to get a better whiff of it. 😛
Another Island Basics product that I’ve come across is their Grapefruit & Lemongrass Body Mist. Indeed I can smell some lemongrass, though I don’t have an educated nose to distinguish grapefruit (I sort of don’t pay attention to how it smells whenever we’d have grapefruit juice at home, hehe :P). What I like most about this is the cool sensation because of mint! It’s perfect for summer, or in our country’s case, any given day. 😛
It is a refreshing scent that’s quite new to me. The only downside is, the scent dissipates rather quickly and within 30 minutes, it just leaves a clean smell on my skin. The cool feeling lasts for about an hour more or less? I give it a rating of 7/10, and I do hope for its improvement. I still recommend it for those who want something different.
You can order this product for Php180/100 mL bottle.

Product Critique: Island Basics Sun Shield

It’s still a bit cold here in the Philippines at night till dawn until maybe February, but of course the sun isn’t in hiding at all. During the day, it is generously glowering its hotness on us mere mortals! 😛
While I appreciate living in a tropical country, I know that I have to protect my skin from the sun’s rays! I don’t want premature aging and darkening to take their toll on the largest organ of my body. Add cancer risks to that and see if it’s not scary enough to go unprotected. I admit that I didn’t consider sunblock as part of my skin regimen before, but now that I’ve realized its importance, I make sure to apply it everyday.
There are a lot of sunblock brands to choose from in the market and sure enough, a battle of the SPF ensues! Higher SPF offers better protection, so they say but I find that sunblocks with higher SPF make my skin, especially my face, feel like it is being suffocated. So I settle for SPF30 and don’t go lower than that.
Imagine my delight when I learned about Island Basics Sun Shield! I was really happy that I came across the brand and this product! I’m glad to know that my face and body is being protected by something made from natural ingredients!
Product description on the label: Naturally protects the skin from the harmful rays of the sun.
Simple instruction: Apply to face and body.
Ingredients: Virgin coconut oil, sweet almond oil, olive oil
Amount of product: 100 mL
Price: Php180
Loves…
  • Packaging is nice because I find products in tubes convenient to use
  • Protects my skin from sun’s harmful rays!
  • Organic product
  • Safe for the face! I love putting this on! 😛
  • Has moisturizing benefits
  • Has an herbal scent that I’ve grown used to and actually like now, ’cause I’m reminded that this sunscreen is full of good stuff
  • Has not caused breakouts so far! 😀
Grrrs…
  • None that I can think of.
Verdict: I give this product 10/10! I love all-natural products that really deliver what they promise! I encourage everyone to give this product a try. This retails for Php180 which in my opinion, is quite a steal already. Please also check out my review on Island Basics Body Butter and their Body Mist! 😀

Product Critique: Island Basics Body Butter

I have a confession to make… I used to loathe moisturizing my body. I hated lotions because I always felt so greasy after applying them even if I have just hopped out of the shower. I know there are lotions that don’t feel thick but I really just wasn’t so keen on taking care of my skin then (now the thought appalls me) that I didn’t bother buying them. Wash and wear lang. Hahaha! 😛
But now that I am more “learned” and “conscious” about taking good care of my body, my skin in particular, I’ve been on the lookout for good, if not the best moisturizers in the market! Aside from lotions, I’ve grown fond of body butters as well! Isn’t that such a great improvement? 😛
I’ve done a teeny bit of research about how body lotions are different from body butters and I’ve found out that lotions are lighter in consistency and act as humectants, preserving the moisture that is already in the skin. On the other hand. body butters are heavier, more emollient and feel more luxurious when applied. Body butters are lubricants that contain ingredients such as shea butter, and natural oils (e.g. coconut, olive and jojoba) and they coat the skin to create a barrier between the skin’s surface and outside elements to seal in moisture. Read more about this here, here, and here.
Enough of my intro! Let me proceed by presenting to you my latest body butter love from Island Basics! The variant that I got is Goat’s Milk and Vanilla Nourishing Body Butter. It was love at first sniff!

Product Description from Island Basics: Give your skin an intensive moisturizing treat without the greasy or sticky after feel. Mildly scented and leaves your skin feeling soft.
Description written on the product label: Intense moisturizing and easily absorbed by the skin.
Ingredients: Goat’s milk, vanilla extract, virgin coconut oil, Vitamin E, and shea butter.

I really, and I mean, REALLY love how this smells. I just want to eat it! Some may find it too sweet-smelling but I like it that way. However, I found out that my appetite increases whenever I slather this on. Good for my skin, not so for my eating habits! 😛
In the moisturizing department, this product deserves five stars! It does a great job of making my skin feel soft and smooth. It’s a little thicker than the lotions I am alternately using with this, as well as with my other body butter.
Loves…
  • The sweet smell!!!
  • Easy to spread and easily absorbed by the skin
  • Moisturizes my skin well without the greasy feel
  • Made from natural ingredients
  • No irritations or adverse reactions
  • Affordable at Php150 for 100 g.
  • Also available in
    • Green Tea and Mint – Anti-aging and Revitalizing
    • Olive – Anti-aging – Read Jes’ review here
    • Pink Pomelo – Uplifting and Calming – Check out Aya’s review of this variant here
Grrrs…
  • Like most body butters, it is packaged in a tub which is a bit unhygienic unless you use a spatula
  • The scent makes me hungry! As in every time I use this. Hahaha!
  • Because it lacks the chemical preservatives, you must consume this faster than your regular body butters and lotions. Not complaining though.
Verdict: I give this product 9 out of 10! Less a point for making me hungry. 😛 I love that it is effective, all-natural, pocket-friendly, and Philippine-made! Doesn’t it make you proud that we’re able to produce these within our shores?
If you want to try this body butter, you can head on over toIsland Basics’ Multiply site to order. I think it would make great gifts to your friends and family members as well!
